What could be better than a great day to be outdoors working for a great environmental cause? That was Birdathon 2007.

The Birdathon, WCAS’ primary fund raiser was held May 12th. There were 20 avid birders roaming the state to find as many species of birds as possible. The weather was warm and pleasant and kept people out in the field all day. We found a total of 190 species which was less than the 204 found last year. Perhaps the generally warm and dry spring with few major weather fronts to concentrate the birds contributed to fewer species found.

Some “nice finds” were the 28 species of warblers and a least bittern. It was interesting to note that some fairly common bird species were missed in spite of our efforts -- northern harrier, Acadian flycatcher, yellow-throated warbler, cerulean warbler, bobolink and eastern meadowlark. These species are normally found but our searchers just happened to not be in the right place at the right time this year.

Funds raised by Birdathon are used to support our lectures, field trips and educational programs for the coming year. Our monthly lectures are held on the third Monday of each month starting in September and field trips are held on many weekends throughout the year. These events are free. The schedule is listed in the WCAS Newsletter and on the website (www.washingtoncrossingaudubon.org).

Congratulations to the Prize Winners:

Prizes were donated by the Belle Mead Farmers Co-Op and Kale’s Nursery. They have been generous supporters of WCAS for many years and carry a large selection of plants, feeders and bird houses.

Early-bird prizes went to Shirley Keefe (Agway Co-Op gift certificate) and Evelyn Roberts (bird feeder). Special prizes were awarded to Landis Eaton (Agway Co-Op gift certificate) and James Bryson (a large basket of feeders and seed from Kales Nursery).

Thanks to all those who made the 2007 Birdathon a success by your generous donations.
