We as Audubon members strive to be environmentally responsible. We support clean air and water regulations and fight for legislation that protects our natural resources. We recycle our paper, cans, and bottles; turn off lights we aren't using and keep our thermostats at 65°/55°; use our bikes for short trips and drive fuel efficient cars; employ insecticides with care; and bring home our groceries in reusable bags. We may feel virtuous when we adopt these measures, especially if they involve inconvenience and minor sacrifice, but down deep we doubt their effect. Now we can make an environmentally beneficial choice with no down side! The German high-end appliances manufacturer, Miele, whose U.S. headquarters is in the eye-catching building designed by Michael Graves on Route One near Ridge Road, has developed a commercial wet cleaning system that could revolutionize how our clothes are cleaned. Instead of toxic, ground-polluting, solvents, this process, available in Europe for a few years, employs special machines and small quantities of water and environmentally friendly detergents. It is no more expensive than dry cleaning and a whole lot safer. In addition, wet-cleaning is perfect for removing stains, and produces cleaner, fresher smelling clothes that are kind to sensitive skin!
