ConservationWCAS Joins
Natural Lands Network
Pat Sziber

WCAS has joined together in a partnership with a number of land trusts and related nonprofits in the area of the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed. The action was approved by a resolution of the WCAS Board on September 2nd. Conservation Chair Pat Sziber has been acting as our chapter's representative to the Network. The mission of the group is "to help balance decisions regarding the use of land to highlight preservation and to emphasize the environmental aspects of development." The Network will serve as a vehicle for sharing expertise among the older and newer member groups, who bring a variety of skills and experience to the table. This networking will allow members to seek advice and counsel about specific issues, obstacles or opportunities. At their bi-monthly meetings there will be presentations on topics significant to land preservation and environmental protection. The Network will also function as a forum for issues of potential interest to the members. Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association is sponsoring the Natural Lands Network.

The first task adopted by the Network was promotion of the various open space referendums. Pat joined George Hawkins of SB-MWA, Ted Stiles of Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space, and Hopewell Twp. Committeewoman Kathleen Bird Maurice in forming a political committee to raise funds and conduct a promotional campaign throughout Mercer County. D&R Greenway coordinated that effort and supplied office support.

While WCAS is not a land trust, it is very appropriate that we should be involved with the Network. We have been making an important contribution to open space planning decisions by speaking up at public meetings and by our growing expertise in conducting and publishing biological inventories. By inviting us to become a member, the Network has recognized the value of our skilled and energetic volunteers. We believe the benefits of our membership will flow in both directions.
