	Wild And Scenic Legislation Introduced

Rep. Jim Greenwood of Pennsylvania introduced H.R. 2317 in the House on June 23^rd. This legislation calls for bringing segments of the lower Delaware River into the National Wild and Scenic River System. Cosponsors of the bill are Reps. Rush Holt and Marge Roukema of N.J. and Patrick Toomey of Pa. The lower Delaware is roughly that part of the river from the northern border of the city of Easton, Pa. to Washington Crossing. The bill also includes several tributaries of the Delaware. Senator Frank Lautenberg introduced S.1296 on June 28^th. The cosponsors of the Senate bill are Rick Santorum and Robert Toricelli. Both bills have been referred to committee.

Wild and Scenic designation places certain restrictions on development along designated rivers. The municipalities bordering this section of the river, with very few exceptions, have passed resolutions supporting the Lower Delaware River Management Plan and requesting that their river segments be designated. The middle and upper portions of the Delaware have already received such designation and the river below Trenton is part of the Delaware Estuary. The Delaware is the last remaining free-flowing major river east of the Mississippi.

What you can do: First, we must thank Senators Lautenberg and Torricelli and Rep. Rush Holt for cosponsoring these bills. Next, write or phone Rep. Chris Smith or Bob Franks, as appropriate, and ask him to vote "yes" on H.R. 2317.
