Round Valley Reservoir @ Round Valley Boat Launch

A field trip on Saturday, February 3, at 8:30 am – noon, led by Mark Witmer and Brad Merritt.

This reservoir in northern Hunterdon County covers over 4,000 acres, is more than 180 feet deep, and is a popular recreational site year-round. Winter is a good time to search for bald eagles, various waterfowl, and gulls. Depending on weather conditions, we will combine this with a tour of the adjacent Cushetunk Mountain Nature Preserve or nearby Spruce Run Recreation Area. Pryde’s Point Trail A NEW field trip on Saturday, February 10, at 9:00 AM led by Mary Penney and Brad Merritt. This Conservation easement area is adjacent to the Alexauken Creek Wildlife Management Area. It has a wonderful wooded area with vistas of Hunterdon County. The terrain is steep in spots but allows for a leisurely walk to experience a remote area of West Amwell.  Directions: Parking area accessible from Gulick Road.  Link to Pryde’s Point Trail map on njtrails website here. A field trip on Saturday, March 24, 2018, led by Brad Merritt. We leave at 7:30 AM from the Rite-Aid in the Princeton Shopping Center. This trip to Cumberland County in South Jersey for early spring migrants involves driving to numerous stops. We would like to carpool to minimize the number of cars. The first stop in Cumberland County is about 1½ hours from Princeton. Please register with Brad Merritt, 609-921-8964, prior to the trip for carpooling instructions.

Park Known for years as the AT&T Overseas Transmission Station, it is more familiarly called The Pole Farm. Directions to Mercer Meadows: From the traffic light at Manors Corner shopping center on Pennington-Lawrenceville Rd, take Keefe Rd toward Princeton for 1.1 miles to the end at Cold Soil Rd. We’ll walk the trails in this Bucks County Park looking for waterfowl, raptors, and early migrating warblers.

Fireman’s Eddy (D&R Canal State Park) @ Fireman's Eddy

A field trip on Saturday, April 21, at 8:00 AM led by Juanita Hummel and Brad Merritt. This section of the D&R Canal State Park is bounded by the Canal on one side and the Delaware River, separated by two large fields being restored as grassland/meadows. The combination of wooded riparian habitat, edge habitat and meadows mean that a large variety of birds can potentially be seen here, including early warblers, swallows, bluebirds, grassland sparrows, raptors and wood ducks. Directions: Park in the lot off Route 29 (River Rd) by canal crossing just north of the Golden Nugget flea market. For more information, contact Brad Merritt at 609-921-8964.

Mount Rose Preserve @ Mt. Rose Preserve

A field trip on Sunday, April 22, at 7:00 AM led by Sharyn Magee and Beth Craighead. Mount Rose Preserve consists of 387 acres of meadows, shrub land, and forest. On this walk we will be looking for a variety of late fall migrants. With the diversity of habitat, this should be a naturalist’s treat. Directions: From Rosedale Road, turn right on Carter Road and continue approx. 3/4 mile.
