Amazonia holds superlative tropical forest - the largest, most diverse and intact on Earth. Its highly heterogeneous mosaic of forest types is home to an enormous diversity of birds that are specialized to these particular habitats. Jacob Socolar’s research seeks to understand the response of bird communities to the reduction of their habitat, resulting from deforestation and increased agriculture. Understanding the consequences of this helps to inform conservation policy.
Mr. Socolar is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University, and received his B.A. in Biology from Swarthmore College. As an ecologist and conservation biologist with broad interests in community dynamics, tropical forests, and avian biology, he focuses on avian community structure in Peruvian Amazonia. He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship.
